Cocoon House has deep roots in our family history and in Madeira’s agricultural tradition. Its origins date back to the early 20th century, when our ancestors built a modest warehouse on the site to support banana production on the agricultural land opposite. For about 100 years, this space served as an integral part of the family’s agricultural activity, bearing silent witness to the work and dedication of several generations.

In 2023, the land and structure were acquired by descendants of the same family, who decided to give the space a new lease of life, respecting the memory of the past but adapting it to the comfort and demands of the present. The initial intention was to rehabilitate the existing building, maintaining the traditional Madeiran style. However, the advanced state of deterioration of the original construction—made with stone walls and without adequate structural conditions—led to the decision to demolish it and build a new house.

The new project, developed by architect Américo Olival of AO Atelier, pays special attention to traditional Madeiran architecture, incorporating modern elements that ensure high standards of energy efficiency, comfort, and quality of materials. The result is a contemporary house that honors its historical heritage while maintaining the welcoming and authentic spirit of the place.

Completed in May 2025, Cocoon House now offers a harmonious and functional space, consisting of two comfortable bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen integrated with the living room, and a completely private outdoor patio—ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the environment and the island’s mild climate.

The name Cocoon House was inspired by how we feel about this space: a small house, yes, but surprisingly cozy, practical, and inviting. Everything is close at hand, every detail has been designed for comfort and well-being, creating a feeling of shelter and tranquility — just like in a cocoon. Here, it’s not just a place to sleep, it’s a space to feel at home, protected from the outside world and surrounded by comfort. A small house… with a big heart.
